Assignment:
In "The Limits of Conscientious Objection - May Pharmacists Refuse to Fill Prescriptions For Emergency Contraception?". Cantor and Baum present a variety of reasons in favor of - and against - a pharmacist's right to conscientious objection. Near the end of their essay, Cantor and Baum argue for a compromise between the position that pharmacists have a duty to always fill prescriptions and the position that pharmacists have a right to not fill a prescription whenever they choose.
One of their proposals is that "...in rural areas, objecting pharmacists should provide referrals within a reasonable radius" (Cantor and Baum, 149). Many times, however, it is impossible to find another pharmacy within a reasonable distance, especially in a rural area. This is certainly true in rural Alaska. This raises an ethical question about the duty of pharmacists in rural areas.
Plan B is currently "over the counter": it can be found without a prescription, but in many cases around Alaska, it can be hard to access or behind a pharmacist's counter. In addition, laws change. For this assignment, please imagine that Plan B is still by prescription only. Is the following thesis ethical?
