What are some the concerns of prescribing children and adolescents' medication? The differences in physical development between children, adolescents, and adults affect how medications are metabolized (Vitiello, 2017; Preston et al., 2021). These differences in their bodies can affect a medication's efficacy and safety (Vitiello, 2017; Preston et al., 2021). Pharmacological medications can have higher risks of toxicities and side effects in children, especially younger children and children with neurodevelopmental disorders (Vitiello, 2017; Preston et al., 2021). There is limited data on the long-term effects of medications on the development of children and adolescents, but some researchers worry that the impacts could be significant (Vitiello, 2017; Preston et al., 2021). There are also ethical concerns when prescribing medication to children and adolescents (Vitiello, 2017; Preston et al., 2021). It is best to obtain consent from both parent and child when possible (Vitiello, 2017; Preston et al., 2021). Media can cause unwarranted fears that lead children and parents to changing medication use (Preston et al., 2021).
