Case: A famous controversial author has been invited to speak at your university. The student newspaper has just published an editorial demanding - with some very offensive language -that the university withdraw the invitation.

There is a rumor that the university is considering withdrawing the invitation. The university is also apparently considering removal of the student newspaper editorial staff.

A small religious group has just announced that it will be protesting on campus. The religious group has previously protested at other locations carrying signs with offensive and arguably obscene images.

The religious group claims an unrestricted right to carry firearms as well as exemption from all taxation. What does the law say about these claims?

You are student government Vice President for Student Affairs.

Some students who support the speaker and a student organization opposing the religious group have emailed you requesting your assistance and advice about their plans to organize their own protests - the students in support of the speaker and the student organization's plan for a counter protest of the religious group. The student organization has also asked you if you believe a court action could prevent or restrict the protest by the religious group.

Just as you are preparing your response to the student emails the university's Vice President for Campus Safety calls you with a plan to set up barriers separating the opposing protest groups from each other and restricting all protesters to an area far from the auditorium where the author will be speaking. How do you respond?

Please cite any case or other law you have studied that would be relevant to your advice and responses.
