Assignment: Project On Job Postings And Advertisements
Practice Writing a Job Posting
Many of the online job board sites will offer blanks for you to copy and paste, or in which to type the information. This exercise is important, however, to understand the previous components of the job description that have been written, and how that translates into posting a job opening.
Take the job description written in Chapter 4(The one you just helped me wrote it)and rewrite it for a general posting. There are a couple of things to take into consideration as you rewrite the description.
a. Offer a general description of the company so applicants understand what the company does, as well as anything else which may be important. This links back to the earlier discussion concerning EVP.
EVP - What you are beginning to assess in the above exercise is what may be described as a company's employee value proposition (EVP). The message of the total tangible and intangible benefits offered to an employee by the company in exchange for work is the EVP. This is closely related to the organization's total rewards strategy, which is the total of tangible and intangible benefits. But the EVP is the communicated message. Thus, the intended strategy and the communicated message may vary.
b. Rewrite the job description in either third person or second person. Depending on the posting, its overall "vibe" may determine the usage. As a rule of thumb, friendlier, less formal postings will generally use "you." More formal postings (or positions, companies) may use statements as in the original job description. Examples would include "the incumbent" or "the individual" to use. Be sure the language chosen matches the source.
c. Be sure to be accurate as well as brief and provide instructions (if necessary) as how to apply.
