Assessment 1 - Individual Literature Review

Your Task

Generate a unique business question which can be explored using available data sources and analytics methodologies mastered in the business analytics degrees.

Assessment Description
• An individual report of 1000 words
• Students are to research the application of one analytics method to an industry and document their findings as a report

Assessment Instructions

The first part of any good research project is a literature review. In approximately 1000 words (excluding referencing) address the following sections which will assist you to outline a business industry problem that can be addressed through data analytics.

1. Industry Background:
Chose an Industry, e.g. healthcare, retail, education, finance, recreation, government, etc. and discuss three key business problems currently facing this industry.

2. Existing Analysis and Methodologies:
Research and evaluate existing analysis on the three business problems you have chosen and reflect on the data and analytics methodologies that may have been employed this this analysis.

Explain and demonstrate the type(s) of internal company data you would ideally need access to in order to achieve your objectives.

3. Data Sources:

Evaluate the types of data sources available to analysts in this industry. Explore the available data sources you can access to address the three business problems you identified in this industry and evaluate what type of descriptive and predictive analytics techniques could potentially be applied to it.
Provide AT LEAST THREE VISUALISATIONS that demonstrate the applicability and relevant of your dataset to your research objective(s).

4. Selecting Business Problem: Generate a unique business question for this industry based on one of the business problems. This is the business problem you will address in Assessment 4 (Industry research report). For the business problem you select summarise briefly:

1. the data source you will use

2. the methodologies you will explore (brief)

3. the originality of your contribution (WHY is your analysis unique given existing analysis)

5. Provide at least ten relevant, credible references to support your ideas and explanations. Use the Harvard referencing system recommended in the "Study Support Resources" section of the portal

Assessment 2 - Methodology Peer Review

Your Task

• Activity 1: All students present in-class (to a partner) their plan for the below steps of the final project:
o Determining what insights industry wants and sourcing data
o Data processing and management
o Data analytics techniques used

• Activity 2: Students write a feedback report for their partner

• Activity 3: Students read the feedback from their partner and complete a short survey on how useful it was

Activity 1: Presentations (30 Minutes)
• Beginning of class lecturer randomly assigns groups of two (2)

• Each student will present for 8-10 minutes outlining their plan for below parts of their research project
o Determining what insights industry wants and sourcing data
» What industry are you looking at? What business question do you want to answer? Is the project feasible given the amount of time you have (12 weeks). Provide some feedback.

» Where will you source your data? How do you anticipate that the data will help answer your business question?

» Is the data able to be analysed? (or are you going down the rabbit hole?)

o Data processing and management
» How will you store and manage the data?

» How much cleaning and filtering do you anticipate the data will require?

» Will the data sources require some effort to integrate?

o Data analytics techniques used
» What techniques will you apply to the data? Have the techniques been used successfully on other data previously?

» How will these techniques provide insights to address the business problem?

» What software will enable you to easily apply the analytics and visualize the data?

Activity 2: Feedback Report

Students will write a brief feedback report (can be dot points as long as you use appropriate headings) for their partner based on below points and send it to their partner as well as submitting on Turnitin. Please remember that you will be marked based on the usability and helpfulness of your comments. Please be respectful in your feedback and addressing the below.

Summary Section (50-100 words)**
A brief introduction to what question the student is addressing, their proposed data set and methodology

Constructive Feedback (200-400 words)** Provide one positive and one constructive piece of feedback about:
• The student's business question and explanation of the industry

• Their data source. Refer back to lecture 3 for potential pitfalls and suggest where the student may face problems.

• The methodology the student plans to use. Suggest alternatives if relevant, and identify any issues they may face given their data and business question.

Recommendations (100 words)
Provide a holistic recommendation regarding the next steps that the students could take. For example, more data sources, looking at different methodologies, going back to subject material from previous subjects etc.

Activity 3: Survey

• Each student shares the feedback with their partner
• Each student completes a google forms survey about how useful the feedback was. This survey will ask the following question:

o How well their partner understood the direction of their project
o How useful their feedback for framing your business question, finding data and selecting a methodology
o How constructive and respectful the feedback was
o Whether it gave you any novel ideas
o Whether it helped you feel more confident taking the next steps

Assessment 3 - Methodology Summary Video

Your Task
• This assessment is to be done individually.
• You will present a 5-8 minute video summary of the below sections of the final research report:
o Data sources and data processing
o Data Analytics Methodology
o Visualisation of Results
• How to make the video?

Assessment Instructions

Prepare a 5-8 minute video on the following three areas of the project:

1. Data Analytics Methodology (8 slides)

• Describe to a general audience the data analytics methodology you chose and why
• Use a flow chart to illustrate the framework
• Address the following
o What was the statistical/analytics method called?
o How much data was used in the model?
o What type(s) if internal company data would have enhanced the model?
o How did you input the data?
o What was the output?

2. Visualisation and Evaluation of Results

• Visualise your (A) descriptive analytics and (B) predictive analytics insights
• Evaluate the model & significance of the analytics in addressing the business problem
• Reflect on the efficacy of the techniques/software used and what other data and techniques could enhance the analysis

3. Brief Summary of your results (2 slides)

• Outline your broad results
• Provide your insights with reference to the business problem you selected.
• Reflect briefly on the role & limitations of the data and analytics technique that you have used in addressing this business problem.

Assessment 4 - Industry Research Report

In order to synthesise what you have learnt throughout you Analytics degree you need to submit an industry research report. This report needs to:

1. Outline a business industry problem that can be addressed through data analytics

2. Apply descriptive and predictive analytics techniques to the business problem

3. Provide recommendations addressing the business problem with reference to by data visualisations and outputs

4. Communicate these recommendations to a diverse audience made up of both analytics and business professionals within the report

The 5 highest performing students (per trimester) in the capstone project will be given an opportunity to apply for an IAPA student credential (see details below).

Assessment Instructions

In your report please follow the below structure.

1. Executive Summary (100 words)
• Dot point summary of business problem and data-driven recommendations

2. Industry Problem (500 words)
• Provide industry background
• Outline a contemporary business problem in this industry
• Argue why solving this problem is important to the industry
• Justify how data can be used to provide actionable insights and solutions
• Reflect on how the availability of data affected the business problem you eventually chose to address

3. Data processing and management (300 words)
• Describe the data source and its relevance
• Outline the applicability of descriptive and predictive analytics techniques to this data in the context of the business problem
• Briefly describe how the data was cleansed, prepared and mined (provide one supporting file to demonstrate this process)

4. Data Analytics Methodology (400 words)
• Describe the data analytics methodology and your rationale for choosing it
• Provide an Appendix with additional detail of the methodology

5. Visualisation and Evaluation of Results (300 words not including visuals)
• Visualise descriptive and predictive analytics insights
• Evaluate the significance of the visuals for addressing the business problem
• Reflect on the efficacy of the techniques/software used

6. Recommendations** (800 words)
• Provide recommendations to address the business problem with reference to data visualisations and outputs
• Effectively communicate the data insights to a diverse audience
• Reflect on the limitations of the data and analytics technique
• Evaluate the role of data analytics in addressing this business problem
• Suggest further data analytics techniques, technologies and plans which may address the business problem in the future

7. Data Ethics and Security (400 words)
• Outline the privacy, legal, security and ethical considerations relevant to the data analysis
• Reflect on the accuracy and transparency of your visualisations
• Recommend how data ethics needs to be considered if using further analytics technologies and data to address this business problem

8. Self-Reflection (100 words)
• Evaluate whether this project has contributed to you satisfying the course learning outcomes for the KBS analytics program (see below)?
• Which course learning outcomes were not sufficiently addressed by assessments done in DATA6000?

The 10 highest-scoring reports will be submitted to IAPA for evaluation, and the authors may be eligible for an IAPA credential after a video interview. IAPA is looking for students who:

a.can assist with the delivery of analytic plans to address the business challenge under supervision

b.can investigate and apply basic data cleansing, preparation, analysis, data mining and analytics techniques and technologies to support the generation of insights and recommendations

c. Can present and visualize data

Process
• The students who authored the 5 highest scoring reports (per trimester) can complete the online application form attaching the necessary supporting information and documents.

• The students will be subject to IAPA assessing each student against the criteria for the Credential. IAPA's assessment may include a video interview with each student.

• IAPA will notify KBS within 30 days after receipt of the completed applications which students have satisfied that criteria and provide certificates confirming the Credential for those students.

• Students who have satisfied the criteria for the Credential will be entitled to state on their CVs, LinkedIn profiles, email signatures, etc. that they are "Student IAPA-certified".

• The Credential will be valid for two years from the date of the certificate and will be free of charge.
