A recommendation that is often given to firms is to invest in employee development by providing ongoing education to prepare employees for additional job responsibilities. However, there is a danger here. Employees own their KSAOs. Consequently, after investments in development, there isn't anything stopping an individual from taking newly learned and highly valuable skill sets to get a job at a competitor.

Given that these kinds of 'training ground' situations makes very negative return on investment, how might they be avoided?
