In-class Summary Requirements, Due Dates, and Group Assignments
Eng 202D -Section 004 - adjusted 1/24
General Information: Each student will be required to read a current article relating to his her major/career interest or new trends in the business world and prepare a written summary of the article as well as present it to the class. For the purpose of this assignment, a current article will be defined as one no more than two years old, and must be taken from a business journal, newspaper, or online version of such media. You could also get one from the college databases id current articles are available. Each student will submit two such summaries in the course of the semester. The presentation style will vary, of course. A minimal presentation would be reading the written summary. For a better grade, a PowerPoint or other form of technological presentation could be used. Charts, graphs, etc. are welcome if they enhance the presentation. Comfortableness with your topic will make a difference in your grade. These presentations are designed to help you to learn how to make presentations of information in meetings, so ease of presentation is important. As stated, each student will do two such presentations during the semester. Of course, the first presentation will be graded a little more easily, but as your skills increase, the bar will be raised!
Point Value: While each summary will be graded on a 100 point basis, together the two will be worth 10 percent of your final grade. You will be graded on presentation format, effective summarization, and grammar and written formatting (including citation as required) of the written summary.
What needs to be submitted: A copy of the article you are summarizing (2) the written summary, in MLA format and cited as needed (3) an emailed version of any PowerPoint or other technological presentation used.
Time allotted: Oral presentation may not exceed more than 10 minutes. Five should probably be sufficient in most cases.
Please note: if you are absent on the day your are to submit your summary, you will lose 10 points of the eventual grade you receive on that summary unless you bring a doctor's note or other proof of an unavoidable absence, such as a court date or proof of a death in your immediate family. If you know in advance that you cannot present on the assigned date, let me know and I will assign you a different date.
Students will be divided into five randomly chosen groups as noted below. If you know ahead of time that you can't be in class on the date assigned for a legitimate reason, please let me know and we can arrange an alternate date.
