1. Evaluating Claim Production Data
- As a leader and manager, the health information administrator is responsible for monitoring and evaluating the performance of processes. This responsibility requires the manager to determine key performance indicators to be included in the monitoring and evaluation process.
- You are the HIM director at Memorial Hospital. You are a member of the revenue cycle department and are charged with monitoring and evaluating key HIM RC processes that impact the stability and health of the facility's revenue
cycle.
- During the claims production process, claims are scrubbed and modified to
ensure that a clean claim is submitted to the payer. Memorial Hospital tracks claims through this process so that inefficiencies in the RC can be addressed. Below is the claims production data for April through June. The HIM coding unit's clean claim metric standard is 95 percent.
TASKS:
* Prepare a summary statement about the coding unit's quarterly performance.
* Create a graphic display that summarizes the coding unit's performance in relation to their standard.
* Is the unit performing as expected, or is there a need for a root cause analysis and process improvement? If there is room for improvement, devise an educational presentation (PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.) that the coding manager could use to educate the staff.
2. Coding Changes: As a leader and manager, the health information administrator is responsible
for communicating reimbursement policy and procedures. This responsibility requires the manager to interpret coding documents and relate requirements to hospital-specific operations.
TASKS:
- Locate the most recent ICD-10-CM Addenda and Official Coding Guidelines on the NCHS website.
- Examine and interpret the guidance provided in the documents.
- Pick three topics to include in a coding education presentation. The topics that you select should represent a major change in coding or coding guidelines. DO NOT pick topics such as one-word modification in description.
- Create an educational presentation that would be provided to coding professionals. The presentation should present the topics and provide coding education and next steps for coding professionals/hospital staff to implement the change(s).
3. Staff Education: You are the director of health information services at a medium-size health care facility in Alabama that provides general, emergency, and pediatric care. You are also responsible for staff education in your facility.
- TASK: Create a presentation which would be used as an in-service educational program for staff members of various departments that addresses confidentiality policies and procedures of your facility and the legal bases underlying these policies and procedures.
- The program should also include a "test" to ensure the staff's understanding of the policies and procedures.
