Question: Rasmussen University Hospital has conducted a 5-year Strategic Plan Review. One of the goals stated the need for community engagement by expanding key services into underserved communities.

The Cardiology Department is requesting additional funding to expand services but needs validation that they have sufficient revenue. The CFO has sent a listing of MS-DRGs with their relative weights and has asked that you calculate the CMI for each DRG and then for the entire group. He wants you to analyze the data and prepare a report that addresses specific findings from the worksheet. He'll use your report and graphics in a presentation to the Cardiology Department.

A hospital's CMI represents the average diagnosis-related group (DRG) relative weight for that hospital. It is calculated by summing the DRG weights for all Medicare discharges and dividing by the number of discharges. CMIs are calculated using both transfer-adjusted cases and unadjusted cases.
