Clay material produce shrinkage cracks during desiccation. Evaporation of water from material surface gives rise to restrained shrinkage, which in turn generates tensile stresses leading to shrinkage cracks as stresses exceed the material strength. This is a very complex phenomenon due to the interactions that take place during the process among material, ambience, and boundary conditions.
