Assessment Self-Assessment

This assessment aims to allow participants to explore and develop key capabilities/competencies in one of the three Mintzberg Managerial Roles in managing an organisation addressed in the subject. There are three sections to this report:
- Introduction,
- Literature review
- Self-analysis/-reflection
- Action plan for development
- Conclusion

The report must focus on one of the following managerial roles:
- Interpersonal OR
- Informational OR
- Decisional

During the tutorials/workshops, some diagnostic tools may be undertaken for each role that serve as the experiential basis for individual reflection about current management practice.

1. Literature Review (approx. 800 - 1,000 words)

Students are then to prepare a literature review about the chosen one role that defines the key terms and outlines key theories or models and application.(See the table below)

Students are to start with a broad overview of the topic (i.e. Interpersonal, or Informational, or Decisional) and how this relates to managing organisations. Students are then to focus on the specific aspect that the self-analysis and reflection identified as requiring development. Students need to focus on this aspect defining the key competencies required and scoping aspects related to acquiring these leadership behaviours.

2. Self-analysis/-reflection (600 - 1,000 words)

Students must utilise at least three (3) of the diagnostic tools undertaken during the tutorials/workshops (such as the Quinn Management Questionnaire, the ESCI (Emotional Intelligence) Situational Leadership Questionnaires, and diagnostic tools specific to the managerial role).

Students are to contrast the results of the diagnostics tests and reflect on their own practice by identifying two incidences from their recent past (i.e. last 12 months) in which the chosen managerial role was being used. Students are then to analyse the incidents to determine whether the results of the self-diagnosis are evidenced in practice.

The objective is for students are then to identify two areas or competencies for improvement that will enhance Interpersonal OR Informational OR Decisional.

3. Action/Development Plan (250 - 350 words)

As a development plan, students are to develop an action plan of key events and activities that they can undertake over the next 6 months to acquire the knowledge, skills and behaviours identified as requiring development in Section 2.

This can include undertaking specific short courses, to develop skills (must be actual courses), a reading plan to acquire conceptual knowledge, maintaining of personal journals reflecting on communication interactions.

This section must include actionable items with timelines and an indication of how you will measure successful completion.

Research Requirements: A minimum of 10 scholarly references are to be used that includes at least 4 peer-reviewed journal articles as citations within the report.

Keep in mind that the academic sources (outside the textbooks) must be peer-reviewed journal articles or scholarly book chapters.

Diagnostic Tools Students need to undertake a minimum of 3 diagnostic tools. Students who do not include at least 3 signed diagnostic tools results sheet receive limited marks for this section. The results sheets should be attached as appendices and the actual results discussed in the previous section. 4 marks Action/ Development Plan Students need to specify at least 3 activities per managerial role that are identifiable as to knowledge and behaviour management development. Specific goals need to be identified in terms of standards and timeframes so that role development can be measured. 250 – 350 words Students must include an overview of the course and how it will facilitate specific knowledge or behavioural development. Other activities can include short courses, industry training, personal reading (must be recognized text) as part of the development plan. 4 marks

Research Associated with the Managerial Role A minimum of 10 scholarly references, with a minimum of 4 Journal articles, correctly cited using APA in-text referencing. A full APA reference list at the end of the report with all references actually cited in the report included in alphabetical order. Students who have less than 10 references will not receive more than 1-2 marks. Students who meet the minimum references (10) receive 3-4 marks. To obtain the full 6 marks, students need to use at least 15 references. 4 marks Self-Analysis / Reflection of Managerial Role Using the results of the diagnostic tests Students are to reflect on the results of the diagnostic tests, directly link these to the literature to explain the specific capability (skills, knowledge and attitudes) that need to be improved. 600 – 1000 words Students should cite at least 2 brief examples of their own behaviour, either in work or social situations that illustrate the two areas that need to be developed. 6 marks
