1.0 GENERAL
The structural design shall be carried out in accordance with the relevant and applicable Australian Standards.
2.0 SCOPE
This document defines the preliminary requirements for the structural steel design for a pump station shed in Telfer, Western Australia.
The shed structure is required to provide shelter for a small water treatment pump station. In order to carry out maintenance on the pumps, a suspended monorail with a 4-tonne lifting capacity is required along the centreline of the structure.
Prepare a design for a pump station shed having a clearance opening width of 6.2 m, an overall length of 18 m and clearance height to the underside of the monorail beam of 4.2 m. The roof is to be clad with Custom Orb sheeting. The sides and ends of the shed are not clad.
Design the following elements:
• The steel structural system, including major column and beam elements, bracing members, purlins and girts
• Major connections for the steel frame
• Base plate and anchor bolts
• Roof cladding
Justify all design decisions and elements.
Full design of the monorail beam is not required, however, it will be necessary to estimate the depth of the beam to ensure sufficient underside clearance is achieved.
The structure will be assumed to be assembled on a simple pad footing. Design of the footing is not part of the scope.
Capital cost economy is a key design consideration. The resulting design and arrangement ideally will be the most economical when considering materials, fabrication, transportation and site erection. Modularisation may reduce time and cost, and improve construction safety and should be considered.
Appropriate site construction cranes can be assumed to be available for the construction of the structure.
