Paper assignment

You are to select photography currently on view at the Museum of Fine Arts in the Exhibition Hiro: Photographs located in the Herb Ritts photography gallery #169 on the first floor of the Evans building and execute a 4-6 page typed, double spaced descriptive analysis in an essay form. Please include a photo of the work and the placement on the wall (‘selfies' are preferred along with your entry ticket provided by the museum).

You may use the handout Elements of a Painting Analysis as the format for your paper. You are to select an image and closely examine the work in detail answering the relevant questions in the hand out for each formal category. Emphasis is placed on your assessment of the formal elements of the work, compositional design, the technical accomplishment of the artist and the complexity of the medium under the influence of the period of time when the work was executed. You are to carefully record your observations while standing or sitting in front of the work in the gallery as the lighting conditions are an essential aspect of your perceptions of the print. You should also include the details related to the way each work is presented to the audience and the kinds of art works that surround it. This is not a research assignment rather it is a test of your visual acuity and your ability to utilize the vocabulary we are developing in class and in the readings.

Begin by providing a brief general description of the subject matter for the work before describing it in detail. Your observations must be recorded in the 3rd person objective form therefore the words I, ME, MY or MINE, should not appear anywhere in your paper.

Remember to please include the museum receipt and the print of the selfie with your paper.

Fascinated with new technologies, Hiro welcomed an invitation by Adobe to experiment with Photoshop when it was first developed. The images that he created using the software were surprising for the time and were featured in the September 1994 issue of the fashion magazine Mirabella.
