Question
Many items could go into the preparation of a team to go abroad as expatriates. The first task would be to make sure the proper documentation was in order such as visas, passports, and any other immigration needs. Then focus should be placed on making sure the health of the employees traveling is taken care of. This includes all vaccinations necessary and any required wellness checks required to travel to the country. Additionally, it may be beneficial to have self-administered mental health evaluations. I believe the mental health evaluations would be important because the employees will be out of their natural environments, which means they would be away from family, friends, and other support systems they may have in place.
Diversity training would be another huge part of preparation for working in another country. Diversity training includes attempting to change and develop employees' outlooks on diversity (Noe, 2020). Diversity training will allow for people of different cultures to see things from the other person's perspective. This will be beneficial when traveling to another country because the employees will be emersed in a different culture. This leads to cross cultural preparation, which is the education of the employees and their families that are going to a foreign country (Noe, 2020). Learning in advance about the culture would be significant, especially being aware of certain things or gestures that may be offensive in another country.
Another way to prepare would be to get to know the company better. This includes getting to know the leaders of the company, executives, locals, and everything in between. Getting to know the culture of the company, even if it is newly acquired, can be important for building a positive rapport. Being an expatriate somewhat makes the employee an outcast so getting to know the culture and establishing a rapport can lead to building allies if and when necessary.
