DESIGN AND EVALUATION ASSIGNMENT
As you learned in Module 7, the careful planning of and preparation for your training session is extremely important. While we don't have the opportunity to practice training in front of each other in this course, we can plan what we will do and say to ensure we are following training best practices.
For the purpose of this assignment, you are going to get ready for a 6-hour training session, which includes three hours before lunch and three hours after lunch. You may select your own topic, perhaps something you will actually use in your job. (If you are having difficulty choosing a topic, choose something you have been trained on before.) You will be graded on your ability to implement the information from Chapter 8 in a complete lesson plan and answers to some additional questions.
Create a new document and begin your assignment, as follows:
1. Decide on a topic and write an appropriate training outcome, which includes the three necessary parts.
2. For your topic, give one example to illustrate each of Gagne's Nine Events of Learning. For example, what you would say to gain attention and what you would tell trainees about the training outcomes.
3. Start a new page in your document and create a lesson plan cover sheet. Fill it out with the information you know about your session right now. Use Table 8.2 as your guide.
4. Start a new page in your document and begin your lesson plan agenda, using Table 8.3 and your answers to Gagne's nine events as your guide. Be sure to also include:
a. A realistic schedule for your training session. You may include short breaks.
b. Appropriate activities for the training outcome. These do not have to be created, just mention what they are. If you are using online videos or other materials, include the link on the cover page.
c. Activities to help trainees feel comfortable and engaged.
d. Plans for interesting delivery of learning. Use a suitable amount of detail that an SME could follow.
e. Sufficient time for suitable questions/discussion/practice and feedback.
f. Plans to encourage trainees to plan the transfer of training to the workplace.
5. Tell how you would assess individual learning and evaluate the overall success of the training program. Include the organizational metrics you feel would be impacted by this training.
6. Describe your greatest skill as a trainer and how it is going to help you in a training classroom. Describe what you believe to be your largest barrier to becoming an effective trainer and what you plan to do to overcome it.
