Samsung is a South Korean-based industrial conglomerate. Over the past few years, its operating performance and overall brand awareness have been driven by its dominance in the mobile device market. As of Q2 2015, Samsung held 21.4% of the smartphone market, the largest of any single manufacturer. It is also the second largest tablet maker, with a 17% market share. However recently, the company has faced reduced profitability in its mobile division. Growth in mobile device sales has slowed, while tablet sales are facing decreases. At the top end of the market, Apple has been able to garner the majority of the market, while lower end devices from Chinese companies such as Huawei and Xiaomi are eating into Samsung's market share of cheaper alternatives. Former staff believe part of the company's challenges is an inability to offer an integrated solution as well executed as Apple can. The company's engineering and hardware expertise can overpower its software and service offerings, yielding an uncoupled and disjointed solution that fails to increase its fulfillment of customer needs. For more information on the challenges facing Samsung's mobile division, read the article Culture shock - Samsung's mobile woes rooted in hardware legacy found in your exercise content handout.
