In the textbook and lecture, we read about the ABCs (or the Triad) of Social Psychology: Affect, Behavior, and Cognition. I wanted to give a contemporary example of this. I recently published an article (available here) in which we showed adaptability-- defined as being able to change one's emotional responses (i.e., affect), behaviors, and cognitions in response to changes in one's environment-- predicted university students' engagement in school during remote learning because of COVID-19 (Zhang et al., 2021). The way that we measure student engagement also reflects this triad of social psychology: emotional engagement refers to students' liking/belonging at school (i.e., their emotional attachment to school; A), behavioral engagement refers to the extent to which they actually complete the assignments and follow the norms/expectations of the teacher (B), and cognitive engagement refers to thinking deeply about the material/having insights (C). In this study, we found that academic emotions mediated this relationship. This means more adaptability predicted more positive academic emotions (e.g., enjoyment) which predicted more engagement. More adaptability also predicted less negative academic emotions (e.g., boredom and anxiety) which predicted more engagement.
In another study I published with colleagues in Frontiers this past year (Thorsteinsen et al., 2021), we looked specifically at the A of engagement: emotional engagement (in a different sample consisting of elementary school students in Norway) to see whether the changes they made in schools post-covid affected their liking and sense of belonging at school (results: yes, it did, particularly for students who didn't like the smaller groups they were assigned to).
Looking at the first study I summarize above (and reference below; Zhang et al., 2021), evaluate your own emotional, behavioral, and cognitive engagement. How would you rate it? Give some examples of each (A, B, C). To increase this engagement, what are some changes you can make (again using the ABCs) to adapt to the current learning situation?
