Question: Prepare summary and the PowerPoint on PROTEUS Bacteria
Pointers for your PowerPoint presentation
Pointer 1. Be sure to include a title slide with your topic/title and your name at a minimum. You can add your course name and number, as well as a date if you wish.
Pointer 2. Unless you are injured or ill, stand to present yourself. You can hold the clicker, pointer, notecards, etc. if you need something to occupy your hands.
Pointer 3. Check the colors of background and font ahead of time. Red font on a black background does NOT work well. Also, be sure to check that font sizes are big enough for those in the back of the room to see clearly.
Pointer 4. Check spelling, grammar, apostrophe use and format of any scientific names that you use. Make sure that slides are not too wordy and that you don't just read them out loud to us. It's okay to be nervous! Make eye contact! We like you and really want to hear what you have to teach us about your topic.
Pointer 5. Practice pronouncing terms ahead of time. Yes, some of the bug and drug names are very tricky. Practicing ahead of time will also help you to get an estimate of how many minutes your presentation will be. Watch out for pesky verbal pauses such as "uh", "um", "like", "you know" and so on.
Pointer 6. Photos, maps, graphs and the like are very helpful to explain concepts. Cite your sources as much as possible to avoid plagiarism.
Pointer 7. Be cautious about using too many "flashy" transitions. Creativity is one thing; vomit- inducing is quite another.
Pointer 8. Not all Nobel Prizes are Nobel Peace Prizes. Believe it or not, there are six categories: Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, Peace and Economics. Also, there are no Nobel Prize "winners". The correct term is Nobel Prize Laureate or Nobel Prize Recipient.
Pointer 9. The reference slide is last and should be in APA format; don't forget to cite images unless you are the photographer. Wikipedia is NEVER a good reference other than images, but the hot links from articles should be able to take you to useful references.
Pointer 10. If you have questions about the presentation assignment, please ask. Remember that participation is also graded at approximately 30%: attendance, attentiveness and feedback for the speakers.
