Power System Assignment

The assessment to design a substation and the associated protection System. The transformer is an existing 33 kV to 11 kV 5 MVA transformers, 3 phase/3 phase Transformer. The choice of transformer connection method, transformer protection and Cooling method is left up to the student. The choice of overhead or underground line feed, protection system, earthling, metering, insulators, security (physical) and associated switchgear, etc. is left up to the student. A line flow diagram of the proposed substation Layout is expected as is the consideration of external events such as lightning protection, etc. Each student is expected to work alone and to produce a short, Detailing the design and justifying each decision. Specific information which will be required is as follows:

  • Type of line - i.e. type of poles, insulators, type of conductor, etc.
  • Ratings of the Transformer 33/11 kV (Z% = 20%).
  • Outgoing cable.
  • MVA Rating of the 11 kV breaker and fault current.
  • Protection requirements.
  • Earthing.
  • Safety requirements.
