-In 2008, U.S. power plants consumed 1.6 trillion (1.6 x 1012) gallons of water. The water was boiled and used to power steam turbines to generate electricity. How much energy in kilojoules was used to boil -1.6 x 1012 gallons of water? It takes 40.7 kJ of energy to boil 1 mole of water. Equivalent statements: 1 gal = 3.785 L, 1 kJ = 1000 J, 1 mole H2O = 18.02 g and the density of water = 1.00 g/ mL.
