Consider an electrochemical cell that consists of two graphite electrodes separated by a large distance in an aqueous electrolyte. A potential of 1 V is applied between the two electrodes. Assume no Faradaic processes occur. a) If the electrolyte is pure water, assuming the polarization of water molecules can be ignored, draw the potential profile across the electrochemical cell. b) If the solution contains 0.1 M KCl, draw schematics showing the distribution of molecules and ions near the two electrodes. Also draw the potential profile across the electrochemical cell. This is essentially a simple supercapacitor. Are the potential drop profiles at the two electrodeelectrolyte interfaces exactly identical? Why?
