This is someone else's and I need a response to give to them off off these questions above:
One of the most common ethical dilemmas that seem to come up frequently as a business owner is compensation or gifts in order to gain favor for contracts. Typically, this is more prevalent in small businesses versus large corporations. In a small business the owner has more personal contact with the contractors and vendors bidding and therefore allowing for more opportunities to appeal to the owner and keep their business. If one rationalized their decisions by saying, "Everyone does it," then they should reconsider. Unethical behavior is not only what you believe to be right and fair, it reflects your personal brand and what people can expect from you personally and professionally.
In this example, the owner of a local gym, Body Focus Fitness, was in the process of opening in Minnesota and had a long list of contractors and vendors to speak with and choose who would get the final ok to do the job. As the bids came in for the build out, the owner found themselves being offered expensive dinners out, gold Rolex watches, and even a vacation home in order to ensure their company would be chosen to complete the half of a million-dollar health club. The owner did take all the gifts presented by one company and rejected all the other bids that had come in from its competitors. Unfortunately, word had gotten out within the employees of BFF and it caused some to lose respect for the owner as she bragged about the gifts. It would not have been such a big deal if the owner had kept that information to herself, but she did not. She was very excited to let everyone know she had not only saved a ton of money on the build but that she was going to Mexico within 30 days. Ethical behavior and integrity are clearly linked to profitability and or saving money. I understand it happens all the time on many levels, but it is worse when it is flaunted in arrogance. It was wrong and caused the company hardship right from opening day.
