Post an analysis of your evolving perspective on leadership. Specifically, explain how your personal definition of leadership has changed or expanded since you began this course.
A leader is someone that is influential, a visionary, and inspires others by their actions. Since entering this course, my understanding of leadership has broadened and exposed me to areas within my leadership style that need improvement. Earlier on, I agreed that I had a democratic leadership style because it spoke to the empowerment and development of the staff, creating an atmosphere of cohesion and inclusion, and building a team like culture (Northouse, 2020). Since then, I have understood the benefits of various styles of leadership that has help me diversify my style of leadership to be more flexible to the individual needs of my team as well as align with the mission.
Then, describe the characteristics you would look for in a future supervisor's leadership (based on your own followership style).
In completing the questionnaire on followship style I discovered areas that were a blind spot and need improvement. Therefore, I look for a leader with a transformational style of leadership. Transformational leaders are able to identify the needed change, create the vision for that change, inspire and guides others to work toward that change, and executes the change as a team (Clark & Corbett, 2018). In addition, they have the ability to help others develop and accomplish their goals. This type of leader would be most beneficial for me because it allows me to work with a leader that is concerned about my professional growth and development and can challenge me and offer constructive criticism that can better me as a leader.
Finally, describe one thing you have learned about yourself as a leader.
I have learned that my democratic style of leadership can have downsides to be aware of such the amount of time that can be wasted trying to ensure alignment, and the loss of control due to the team like culture. This has taught me the importance of balance, boundary, and clear guidelines when operating in this style to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.
