Arterial oxygen levels normally range from 75-100 mm Hg. When climbing at a high elevation, arterial oxygen levels begin to drop. Chemosensors in the carotid and aortic bodies detect this drop in oxygen and signal towards the brain stem. Via the phrenic nerve, the brain stem stimulates the diaphragm to increase the rate and depth of breathing.

Draw this feedback loop.

On your drawing, label all steps of the pathway (e.g. sensor is one of the steps).

Identify the entire process as a positive or negative feedback loop and explain your reasoning.
