Polymerase Chain Reactions (PCR) is an in vitro (not inside cells) method that allows researchers to synthesize specific sequences of DNA in the lab. The process of PCR consists of several steps of heating and cooling a tube containing DNA: heating it to approximately 95°C to separate the strands, cooling it to approximately 65°C to encourage primer sequences to attach to specific DNA sequences, and then heating it to approximately 70°C for the DNA synthesis machinery to begin building the new DNA strands. This process is repeated about 30 times, each time doubling the amount of DNA sequences that the researchers are targeting.
