On page 345, the course textbook states that "political parties appealed to popular emotions, religious views, and ethnic prejudices. Party-subsidized newspapers regularly indulged in scurrilous attacks on political candidates. The language of politics became contentious and militaristic. Jackson's rhetoric exemplified the new trends. He described an opponent as an 'enemy.' Politicians talked of elections as battles and of their disciplined 'rank and file. Strong party identification became part of the new political culture." Explain how this is similar to contemporary American political practices. Also, explain what this suggests in response to those in contemporary American society who claim that things like "attack ads" and "dirty campaigns" are new developments. Additionally, explain what this might suggest about how politics works in the United States when it is considered alongside the point from the textbook that Andrew "Jackson's presidency was crucial to bringing politics to the center of many Americans' lives" (344).
