*The healthcare industry's rush to big data has been fueled by accountable care's focus on managing at-risk patient populations, particularly those with chronic diseases such as congestive heart failure, diabetes, and hypertension, for whom effective management has been shown to improve outcomes and reduce costs. Accountable care involves risk sharing whereby reduced costs are shared with providers who management produced the improved results. Accountable care and its emphasis on managing patient cohorts or populations across care settings has done a great deal to shine a light on the state of healthcare information. It has brought attention to bad data, the challenges of accessibility, and how much needs to be learned about how to use information to inform decisions. It has also triggered an interest in data ad information governance and is accelerating the pace of learning about how to use aggregated information.
