On several orbits astronauts aboard the shuttle Endeavor could see broad plumes of smoke obscuring much of the forested area of South America. The plumes formed an orderly pattern and were confined to jungles and otherwise sparsely inhabited areas. From these signs it was obvious that recent policies designed to encourage farmers to use alternative land-clearing methods had failed: people were intentionally burning off portions of the rain forest for agriculture.
