A conventional consolidated drained (CD) triaxial test is conducted on sand. The cell pressure is 100 kPa, and the applied axial stress at failure is 200 kPa.

Required:

a. Plot the Mohr circles for both (1) initial and (2) failure stress conditions.

b. Determine Phi (assume c=0)

c. Determine (3) the shear stress on the failure plane at failure Tao,ff and find (4) the theoretical angle of the failure plane in the specimen.

d. Determine (5) the maximum shear stress at failure Tao,max and (6) the angle of the plane on which Tao,max acts; calculate (7) the available shear stress on the plane.

e. Calculate factor of safety (F.S.) on (8) the plane of Tao,max and (9) the failure plane.
