Seismic Assessment

The figures below show schematic plan and elevation views of an existing residential masonry building. In the plan view only structural walls are reported. Dimensions are in cm. Material properties can be assumed to have the following mean values, f = 3.6 MPa, τ₀ = 0.09 MPa, f_v0 = 0.2 MPa, E = 1700 MPa, G = 570 MPa, w = 18 kN/m³. All the walls have a thickness of 25 cm. Slabs are simply supported and span in the X direction. They can be considered rigid in their planes.

The following loads can be assumed on the slabs: Structural dead load = 2.5 kN/m², Non-structural dead load = 3.0 kN/m², Live load = 2.0 kN/m². For the roof: structural dead load = 2.4 kN/m², Non-structural dead load = kN/m², snow load 1.2 kN/m². Consider the roof as an equivalent flat roof at the level of the top slab.

You can assume that masonry piers do not rotate at top and that spandrels are rigid. Consider Knowledge Level 1. Assume the seismic action in Y direction only, neglecting eccentricity.

1. Plot the elastic and design response spectra for the Damage Limitation (DL) and Life Safety (LS) Limit state. The building is in Ravenna. Uniform Hazard spectra are defined by the attached parameters

2. Neglecting the in-plan eccentricity, perform a modal analysis of the structure, considering the behavior in the Y direction only. Compute natural periods, and plot modal shapes.1 Compute the equivalent static forces at the different floors of the structure and the storey shear diagrams using both the DL and the LS spectra defined in (2).

3. Evaluate equivalent static forces considering the DL and the LS spectra using the Linear Static Analysis method (linear analysis). Plot the storey shear diagrams.

4. Considering forces from Linear Static Analysis, compute the interstorey drift at the ground floor for the DL limit state.

5. Considering forces from Linear Static Analysis, compute the shear force in the walls at the ground floor for the LS limit state.

6. Considering forces from Linear Static Analysis verify the in-plane strength of the walls at the ground floor for the LS limit state.
