An issue that spoke to me this week was something I read about in the Mass Communication Theory. This is something I have also learned. Cultivation Theory assumes that an audience is influenced by what they see on TV to the point of it becoming their desired reality. People wish to emulate the lives and experiences they seen on TV because they are seen as more glamorized and desirable than their own. They acquire misperceptions about the daily routines of life, and display false hope for something "better". There are thousands of television plots and scenarios that are completely unrealistic in the real world. However, some of these may seem more "fun" or "exciting" compared to what someone experiences on a daily basis, so they experience the feeling of "the grass is always greener". People get very caught up in television plots, to the point of referencing them regularly, or making assumptions about their own lives based on something they've seen. For example, I have often seen this with the show One Tree Hill. On One Tree Hill, romantic relationships are thrown around like they're nothing, recycled left and right. People are shot and killed and never spoken about a week later, followed by an earthquake and then someone winning the lottery. I have seen people watch this show and reshape the way they expect their lives to go. It sometimes fosters a belief that you can do less and get more. I guess my question would be, do you guys think that you have ever experienced this? Have you ever watched a tv show and had it shape the way you viewed your own reality?
