Plant Hormones Regulate Development
Many mechanisms control seed germination. This is necessary for the growth and development of new plant. What would happen if a seed germinated before the environmental conditions were right?
Plant hormones, environmental factors, and genetics affect seed germination.
Please read Stross, R. (2015). Germination and seedling development. https://academic.oup.com/aobpla/article/doi/10.1093/aobpla/plv041/201015
In the article, many examples were given of environmental factors that can influence hormones and genes, which ultimately affect plant growth. Dr. Stross suggested that wild plants have more controls to protect the seeds than cultivated plant do. For this discussion investigate one (1) mechanism that protects seeds and directs germination. You will explain what hormones, genes, and controls are involved.
Find at least one (1) journal article from PLOS or PubMed that discusses the plant species you chose.
In your discussion include:
-Summarize the research that is being conducted.
-What hormones are involved?
-What genes are expressed?
-What happens if a mutation occurs?
-Do you think this protection mechanism could be replicated in cultivated crops? What would be the benefit?
-What questions do you still think should be investigated in this system? Why?
