Water Supply System Design Project
Your engineering company has been hired to help for planning the basic elements of a drinking water distribution network for a future suburb development. Since the project is in the initial stages of planning, only rudimentary data, such as a basic map and feature locations, are currently available. For this project, you should use the information that is provided and clearly document any additional data sources and assumptions that you deem necessary to complete the design elements that are mentioned below.
Water distribution system design usually involves (1) demand forecasting, (2) pipe network layout and sizing (3) reservoir/tank sizing, and in some cases (4) pump design and operating schedules. In this project, YOU ARE ONLY REQUIRED TO DESIGN "PIPE NETWORK". In order to design water distribution system, "demand forecasting" study performed by another engineering company, and given in Table 1. (You will select the demands according to the group number).
In this project, you should decide the pipe network layout first. According to the given demands in Table 1, you should determine the size that is needed for each pipe segment. The pipes should be big enough to handle the design flow rates without too much head loss, however, if they're too big then the cost of the project will significantly increase. You should design (size) only the municipal pipes (not the service lines). Create a logical naming system for your pipes and the nodes that they connect.
In your report, you must provide a table of results for pipe segments (Name/Number, Length, Diameter, Material, Flow, Head Loss, and Friction Factor) and junctions (Name/Number, Elevation, Demand and Pressure Head). You should also create a distribution network schematic map that shows the location, size, and length of each line, as well as the flow rate in each pipe during the peak flow condition and the pressure and demand (outflow if any) at each junction.
You can use following information as your design guideline:
Vmin=0.2 m/s, Vmax=2.5 m/s, Dmin=200 mm, Minimum cover depth= 1 m, Pmin=10 m (pressure head), Pmax=70 m.
For your hydraulic design, you will use EPANET software, and you will also submit the EPANET file. Your finished report should look professional, be easy to follow, and all of your calculations should be clearly documented and provided. Check the marking rubric to see the grading details.
