Assignment : The City Image
There are two objectives of this assignment:
1. To capture the visual image of the city as perceived by you.
2. To understand the application of Lynch's five city elements to illustrate the visual image of the city.
Methodology
In this assignment, you will make a PowerPoint presentation (not more than 15 to 20 slides) on the visual image of the city.
Choose a place that you are familiar with. It can be Springfield, your hometown or any other city. You will need to use photographs to capture the image of your chosen city. If you take your own photographs, please make sure that they are taken on a clear day and their composition is standardized.
Select the photographs which represent the visual character of your chosen place e.g. landmarks, nodes edges etc. Identify them in terms of Lynch's five visual elements of the city.
PowerPoint presentation should include the following information:
The objective of the study
Short Introduction which can include:
- History (a paragraph or two).
- Location, the Street Pattern
Describe the five visual elements of the city as described by Kevin Lynch with captioned photographs.
Conclusion - Do your photographs represent the visual image of the city in the minds of its residents and visitors?
