Managers, James and Maureen, are conducting a planning meeting for the upcoming new consulting project. The last issue to be decided is who will lead the team. James suggests Lee Chang. Maurin thinks James is joking: Lee is always quiet, and no one even notices him. James reminds Maureen that Lee is better qualified than others, has more experience, does a superior job on all his projects, provides smart and innovative input, but has never been given a chance to lead. In James' opinion, Lee might do very well as a project leader, have his team achieve outstanding results, and exceed customers' expectations. Maureen replies that in the competitive environment there is no time for experiments. People hardly understand Lee's heavy accent, he has poor communication skills and is lacking assertiveness. A discussion ensues with James champion in Lee's qualifications while Maureen points out that Lee needs to adapt to language and culture first and, because of his timid nature, can never be a leader.
