Plan and Conduct an Inquiry

Purpose

Your task is to plan and conduct a lab activity into how ONE of the following factors affect the rate of a chemical reaction: change in temperature (ex. hot vs. cold water), increased surface area (i.e. particle size), change in concentration or increased pressure.

Possible questions for testing:

  • How does concentration of the reactants affect the reaction rate?
  • How does the surface area of the reactants affect the reaction rate?
  • How does temperature affect the reaction rate?
  • How does pressure affect the reaction rate?

You are to design a lab report to test these factors using only the necessary materials below:

Materials

  • Antacid tablets
  • Ice water
  • Warm water
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Clear drinking glasses (or beakers)
  • Mortar and pestle
  • Small sealable container (ex. camera film container)
  • Stopwatch
  • Thermometre
