You prepare a plate of agar (a gelatin-like substance) as shown in the figure above. At position 9, you place iodine solution, an indicator chemical that turns black in the presence of starch. At position 1, you place starch solution.

a) At what position in the agar plate do you predict the black color will first appear?

Explain your answer:

b) In reference to question a) above, is the chemical reaction that produced the black color the result of molecules moving by diffusion or osmosis? Explain your answer.

c) If you repeated the experiment, placing an amino acid solution at one end of the gel and a protein solution at the other end, which solution would reach position 5 first? Explain your answer.
