A vertically mounted piston-cylinder device contains 1.5 kg of water and is being heated over a coal burning stove. During the process, 75 kJ of heat is transferred to the water and heat losses from the side walls amount to 9 kJ. The piston rises as a result of evaporation and 5000 N-m of work is done by the vapor. Determine the final energy of the system (i.e. water) if its initial energy was 419 kJ/kg.

Carbon diffuses in iron via an interstitial mechanism : Carbon diffuses in iron via an interstitial mechanism—for FCC iron from one octahedral site to an adjacent one. In Section 4.3 (Figure 4.3a), we note that two general sets of point coordinates for this site are 0 ½ 1 and ½ ½ ½ . Specify the family of..
Determine internal energy change as saturated liquid steam : Determine the internal energy change as saturated liquid steam at 600F goes to a two phase mixture of quality 0.40 at 600F. Saturated vapor water at 130?C undergoes an isometric process to 0.4 MPa. Determine the final fluid phase and the enthalpy cha..
Determine the final temperature of the ammonia : Ammonia vapor in a piston-cylinder assembly undergoes a constant-pressure process from saturated vapor at 10 bars. The work is +16.5kJ/kg. Changes in kinetic and potential energy are negligible. Determine (a) the final temperature of the ammonia in d..
