Kim has been working full-time as a physiotherapist at Zest for Life Pty Ltd for eighteen months when she tells Susan that she's three months pregnant and would like to take parental leave in six months time. Susan is agreeable to this arrangement and tells Kim that she can take a year's parental leave and she will be paid for the first 12 weeks at her usual salary. Kim says she plans to return to work full-time after six months. Susan tells Kim than in her many years of experience, she's found that female physiotherapists find it very difficult to work as their pregnancy progresses. She says that in the final trimester of her pregnancy, Kim will need to reduce her hours to part-time and Susan will hire another physiotherapist to take on her hours so that Zest for Life has enough staff to service its clients. Three months later, a new physiotherapist starts working full-time at Zest for Life and Susan tells them that the position will be full-time even after Kim returns from parental leave because Kim will be part-time. When Kim hears about this she is quite upset because she had been planning to return to work.
