The patient is a 21-year-old male with a psychosocial history that includes physical and mental abuse by his stepfather as a child. He has struggled with severe mood swings and outbursts of extreme anger around others since he was 10 years old. The patient is a heavy alcohol drinker and uses alcohol to help cope with his anger and mood swings. The patient's family has seen an escalation in his symptoms since his girlfriend broke up with him 1 week ago, and he has been out of control and unpredictable. The patient reports feeling very down at times, and other times he experiences mania symptoms where he parties with his friends and drinks all night. The patient's family members state that they are also afraid of him when he gets mad, and they do not know what he might do. Today, after an argument with his stepfather, the patient pulled out a gun in the living room and threatened to harm anyone who got close to him. The police were called, and the patient was admitted to an inpatient psychiatric hospital for treatment of his anger issues. Vital signs: Temperature 99°F, pulse 110 bpm, respirations 20 breaths/min, blood pressure 130/88.
