As a teacher one of my first priorities is going to be building relationships with my students and in doing so early in the school year my hope is that I will be able to quickly notice students with emotional needs. As stated in the textbook, students with emotional disturbances have characteristics that affect their academic performance such as, breaking rules, not working well in groups, interrupting instruction, poor concentration, resist changes in routine, and speak out are a few listed (Powell, et. al., 2019). It will be important to be aware of these behaviors so that I can set up learning instruction that meets these needs and does not make the situation worse.

Explain at least three strategies that you will use to support children with ADHD, ED, and BD. You can pull a strategy from the Week Three discussions, your course text, or another scholarly source.

The first strategy I will use to set up an inclusive classroom is Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS). Having clear rules and expectations laid out from the first day of school will allow all students to know what is expected of them in the classroom. Additionally, I will focus on using positive reinforcement for students so that they know what they are doing well.

The second strategy I will use is differentiated learning which "addresses the way teachers respond to the different needs of learners in their classrooms" (Krogh, et. al. 2015., Ch. 4.3). Through this strategy I can make the lesson unique to individual student needs, for example allowing a student to work individually instead of in a group or making a lesson more hands with the use of manipulatives if needed.

The third strategy I will use is Explicit Instruction, which will allow me to provide the content in a short, straightforward manner. This strategy will be especially beneficial to students with ADHD as it allows them to stay focused for a short time and keep actively engaged (Powell, et. al., 2019).

My goal for an inclusive classroom is to make all of my students feel welcome and comfortable, allowing each student to be successful in their education. With this idea of inclusion, it is important for me to utilize many of the evidence-based strategies we have been learning about. The strategies of PBIS, differentiated learning, and explicit instruction not only will be helpful in working with students who have emotional needs, but they will be useful for all students in the classroom. My idea of inclusion is that ALL students are receiving instruction that helps them maximize their learning and makes the content accessible to their needs.
