Purpose:

The purpose of this assignment is to help you review and demonstrate understanding of

1) Animal Ethics and 2) Environmental ethics

1) Consider humane farming (where animals live good, pain-free lives and then are painlessly killed for their meat). Explain the difference in perspective between (i) animal welfare theorists and (ii) animal rights theorists. What would each of them say about whether this was a morally acceptable activity or not?

2) According to Paul Taylor, does the influenza bacterium (the microorganism that causes the flu) have a good? If so, what is it? (define "a good" first).

For the next 2 questions, picture the following scenario: You are walking along a country lane and come upon a flower, which you think would look lovely in a vase on your desk. Meanwhile, a hungry butterfly also has the flower in its sights, and if it drinks the nectar, the flower won't be pretty anymore and won't look good on your desk. There is no other flower around.
