1. If you had to choose just one of the philosophical approaches in ethical decision making, which would you choose? Why? Or, if you had to rank them from most to least helpful, how would you rank them?
2. Where do you stand on the question of the proper focus of a business firm: stakeholders or shareholders? Should the senior executives be concerned about the rights and wellbeing of the wide range of the individuals, groups, and organizations associated in some way with the operations of the company, or should they worry far more about increasing value and generating profits for the owners of the firm? You can obviously pick either side of the argument, but what reasons would you give to convincingly support your stand?
3. Warren Buffett, is the most successful investment manager in history. His company, Berkshire Hathaway, has generated immense returns for his stockholders and for himself--though he follows a simple and frugal lifestyle. He is also well known for brief but insightful comments about important topics ranging from the global economy to human character, often made in a self-effacing "someone once said" format. This later trait won him the title "Oracle of Omaha." One of those insightful comments about people is cited here:
"Somebody once said that in looking for people to hire you look for integrity, intelligence and energy. And, if they don't have the first, the other two will kill you". (John Woods, The Quotable Executive, McGraw-Hill, 2000)
What does the term "integrity" mean to you? And, how should you demonstrate integrity, as a manager, at work?
4. Philippine offshore gaming operators, often referred to as POGOs, is a Philippine-based online gambling company that offers services to customers outside of the country.
POGOs began their operations in November 2016, during the Duterte Administration, signed in Executive Order No. 13. Today, it is now rapidly expanding in the country. The Bureau of Internal Revenue collected a total of PHP 5.28 billion (US$101 million) in 2020 and PHP 3.47 billion (US$67 million) in 2021. Currently, lawmakers file a bill to ban online gambling because it has spun a fresh spate of kidnappings involving mostly Chinese nationals. However, closure of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) will lead to the loss of over 23,000 jobs held by Filipinos. What are your thoughts on this?
What steps would you take if you had the power to decide?
