Persuasive Research Speech Assignment
Persuasive Speech: A full sentence outline, prepared according to class instruction. Must be typed and completely developed with a work cited page in proper format MLA/APA format, doesn't matter which one, just select one citation style and use it consistently (our library website has formatting assistance online).
Speech must be 5 minutes long and on a topic that is meaningful and significant. If the topic you select is significant but in a remote way, be sure to formulate your argument and research to connect well to this particular audience (this class).
Delivery is expected to be extemporaneous. You may rely on one page of outline/or 5 note cards ONLY. Of course you may record your research to refer to during your speech.
Introduction should be formatted according to readings and class. You may select Problem-Cause-Solution or Monroe's Motivated Sequence organizational pattern. Be certain to include research in each section of your speech: Introduction (significance of topic), as you illuminate the problem as important, the cause (if presented), and the solution. The research requirement is a MINIMUM OF 5 RESEARCH SOURCES, stated in-text of your speech. Include a work cited page for your research (APA or MLA).
Remember: the CAUSE of the problem is often the most interesting (and often overlooked) part of a problem. Ask yourself: WHY is this issue a problem...why does it continue to be a problem...what has kept individuals and society from addressing and "fixing" this problem?? Reasons may go to your particular belief in human nature. As with any persuasive argument, your reasoning must be credible and sound, avoid oversimplifications, hasty generalizations, and other logical reasoning fallacies. Be sure to DEFINE any vocabulary so that you may establish common understanding of core concepts with your audience.
Increased credibility and often higher grades are earned by students that answer these hard questions, and include academic sources (texts and journals) as part of their speech research. As well, when you state your beliefs try to explain the reasons for your beliefs. Theories that you have previously studied in other courses and from our text may help you to both explain your reasoning and offer us language to better understand the issue, while building your credibility to speak on a particular controversial topic.
