One way to ease the way toward persuasion is to find common bonds with the audience. In 1976, Jimmy Carter went to the American Legion convention to float his idea for a pardon for Viet Nam era draft dodgers. Clearly, the American Legion was an sympathetic to that idea. Carter was able to bridge the gap (at least partially) by finding some "common ground" between himself and the Legion members.

Pick a topic and see if you can identify "common ground" that a potential audience might share with the speaker on this issue. It's best to assume that the audience is at least indifferent to the proposed solution rather than enthusiastic about it. Carter could have gone to any number of groups disposed to his idea; he chose to vet it against one of the most vocally opposed groups he could find.

Some examples- Ross Perot was able to convince potential voters that they should accept a huge increase in the federal tax on gasoline by pledging that the money raised would go toward reducing the federal debt and thus not compromise the future of our children; Bush used national security to overcome objections to the war in Iraq; Kennedy said "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country" to get people on board with his proposed changes. MLK urged his audience to "...rise up and live out the true meaning of our creed" to make the commitment to intergration and equality.
