2. Thesis: After selecting your topic and reviewing this week's lesson content on thesis statements, post a working thesis statement in the discussion forum.

Step 1: Pick your topic and write a topic statement
The topic must be:
• Related to your field of study
• Current
• Persuasive
• Something you know about but can later conduct additional research on
• Something that will hold your interest for four weeks
• Stuck on a topic? Try searching the Library or Google Scholar. Search "Current issues in <<field>>." Narrow to credible articles from 2015-2018. Do not read the articles. Scan summaries and keywords for ideas. Do Not Use Google. Google searches are based on popularity not relevance or credibility.

Ask Yourself:
What is your field of study?
What is your general topic?
How is the topic field related ?
Why have you chosen this topic?
What do you already know about this topic without doing research?
What are you persuading?
What are three reasons?
What else can you share about the topic?

Step 2: Turn a Topic Into question. Once you have a topic, the next step towards your thesis is to turn your topic into a question.
What do you intend to persuade your audience?
How many reasons do you need?
Combine A and B into one question.

Step 3: Answer the question to form a thesis.

Make the question and answers into a single, full sentence thesis.

Step 4: Check the thesis
Is the thesis Topic + action verb + pattern for development?
Is the thesis a full sentence?
Is the thesis an answer to a question and not a question?
Is the thesis in third person?

Does the thesis avoid phrases such as "This essay will" or "In this essay"?

Step 5: Post
Once your thesis reflects a yes answer to all give questions, post your topic sentence and thesis in the format below.

Topic
As an education student, I'm very interested in the various initiatives being tested to improve failing schools. I've read about Common Core, Race to the Top, Move on When Ready, and other options. Common Core addresses a large number of issues. Still, many people have concerns about it. My topic for my final paper will be persuading my audience that Common Core is good for schools.
Thesis
Common Core makes schools stronger by setting knowledge outcomes not content, by reinforcing skills, and by allowing space for teaching and learning.

In peer review:
Comment on classmates' thesis statements as well as answer any clarifying questions students have about your work. Peer critique is of great value to the writer and reader. The writer benefits from another set of eyes and the reader is able to learn a variety of ways in which to provide feedback. Your review is meaningful and important.
Quality of Posts
In all posts, quality matters. This is a writing class. The goal of grading mechanics in reflection/discussion is to help you develop strong writing habits. I've read many posts so far where some of you have expressed worries about writing. Some parts of writing are 'feel as you go' but others like format and mechanics have clear guidelines. By adhering to them, not only will you be able to focus on the content while earning as much credit as possible, but others perception of your writing will improve.
Some areas for writing improvement include (but are not limited to):
• grammar and punctuation
• sentence structure
• paragraph structure
• organizing thoughts
• using the best wording
• writing with clarity
