Assessment - Reflective Issues report
A great deal of your time at university will be spent thinking; thinking about what people have said, what you have read, what you yourself are thinking and how your thinking has changed. It is generally believed that the thinking process involves two aspects: reflective thinking and critical thinking. They are not separate processes; rather, they are closely connected (Brookfield 1987).
Reflective thinking therefore allows you to recognise that you bring valuable knowledge to every experience. It helps you to clarify the important connections between what you already know and what you are learning. As such, it enables you to become an active, aware and critical learner.
The purpose of this assignment is to assess your ability to learn from reflecting on human resource management situations through analysis of literature, readings and class discussions.
The ability to reflect upon on current events is a very important skill in human resource management and one that this assessment is seeking to develop.
Instructions:
A reflective learning analysis is a personal record of students' learning experiences. You are asked to record learning-related incidents, both during the learning process (lectures and tutorials) as well as after the learning has occurred (i.e.: did the topic or issue prompt you to engage in further research).
For this assignment, you are required to identify an employment relations issue/problem, which is currently or has very recently been in the Australian news media. The issue/problem should relate to some aspect of one of the topics covered in Weeks 2, 3 or 4, those topics being:
• Week 2: What is SHRM? Models of SHRM and HRM
• Week 3: External and internal influences: Managing people ethically
• Week 4: Perspectives on the employment relationship: HR and the Law
Purpose:
Examples of issues that students may be interested to address include:
• Harassment and bullying in the Australian Defence Force
• Qantas restructure and impact on HR activities
• Woolworths failed to pay correct wages
• University redundancies resulting from Covid=19
Submission Instructions:
The reflective questions you need to address are:
a) What are the major themes and issues in the situation?
b) What is the employers' perspective?
c) What is the employees' perspective?
d) What are the implications of the issue for the organisation e.g. brand, reputation?
e) Suggest how you as a HR Manager could assist the organisation in resolving the issue?
This reflective analysis should consider the theories/models and practical material discussed in class as well as additional research students have undertaken.
You should use the required text as a starting point and identify a minimum of five high quality journal articles that should be included as references in your assessment.
This is your chance to consider a real HR situation and reflect on what occurred, the impact and the outcome.
A possible structure for the reflective analysis could be:
a) Introduction (100 words)
b) Major themes and issues (275 words)
c) Link to the relevant week (2-4) discussion (400 words)
d) Implications for the organisation (200 words)
e) Discuss how you as a HR Manager could have assisted the organisation in resolving the issue (275 words)
