Instead, you are asked to make an argument which will be evaluated according to the quality of your argument and whether or not the evidence and reasoning you use to support your argument is convincing.

This unit provides you with perspective on the long run-up to the American Civil War. Problems and division in the pre-war period built up over the course of decades, rather than weeks or months. In a discussion post evaluate which single event, in your opinion, marked the point of no return before which it was possible to avoid war and after which armed conflict became inevitable. Explain, with evidence from the course text, why you feel as you do. This assignment does ask for opinion, but your opinion MUST be supported by evidence from this unit to justify your argument.
