The discussion video with Noelle Paige changed my perspective of public service in the sense that public service, while provided directly by the government, is partially influenced by the private sector. For example, renewable energy is an issue that is actively on the policy agenda, but the government can only do so much to create energy (Birkland, 2020). Companies such as Cypress Creek Renewables creates and distributes solar panels which help create renewable energy (Interview with Noelle Paige, n.d.). Companies that create products that produce renewable energy allow the government to pursue their clean energy agenda.
The video also helped me better appreciate how private companies can help the public good. Renewable energy can be good for the environment, which is good for the environmental health of Americans. Additionally, Paige points out that Cypress Creek Renewables provides a net good to the country by upgrading the electrical grid at no cost to taxpayers (Interview with Noelle Paige, n.d.). Essentially, the work being done by the company is ecologically and economically sustainable and beneficial to the public overall.
As for working for the private sector, I would prefer to work for an organization that promotes social responsibility. While making a profit is essential for a company to stay alive, working merely for financial gain can be taxing and lead to burnout. However, I believe that having a sense of purpose in my work and knowing that the company that I work for is inherently ethical in their conduct and mission would boost my long-term motivation as an employee. For these reasons, organizations listed as B Corps would be at the top of my list of private sector jobs (Gitman et al., 2018).
