Athanasius taught that the Son became incarnate. He came to our corrupted and gone-wrong realm so that he could transform us and receive us into the incorruptible realm and into communion with God. The idea is called theosis or divinization. Don't worry you don't bump the Father, Son, or Spirit out of the way when you get to heaven. They will still be uniquely God. But if you are ever going to have fellowship with God you must be changed. The Son came to defeat evil in ourselves and our world so he could lead us to his. Quote a key passage from Section 54 concerning theosis.
Athanasius thought that the Son becoming man was necessary for humans to grasp again who God really is (Sections 43-44). The Son's display of God's work (fitting for only God) in human form has other consequences as well.
